Have been looking at box blades- was wondering if anyone knows if a 5 foot will work well with my tractor(YM 2000)? I figure a 4 foot would be optimal, but they seem to be a lot harder to come by around here. If anyone knows of a good place to get one in my area (northeast Alabama/northwest Georgia or middle Tennessee) I would appreciate it. Thanks.......Shawn

I was contemplating the same decision a few months ago for my Ym2000. I decided on a 5' from the TSC. One thing I discovered when using the blade is that the extra width is helpful when making turns to grab some dirt. You can catch only about 12" when making these sharp turns. With a 4' blade, you would greatly reduce this ability.
I'd actually like to sell mine since just today, I received my new Kioti CK20 tractor with an FEL. I believe I can accomplish all that I need to do now in the way of grading with my FEL.

Thanks for responding-since you've got the same setup I was considering (was even looking at the model from TSC myself), I was wondering if the weight of that 5 foot seemed to be ok on your tractor. The reason I'm asking is that I use a 4 foot rotary cutter on it now and as I'm sure you know the front end gets VERY light if you raise it more than a foot or so off the ground.(One of my future plans is to add some weight to the front in some fashion.) I'm thinking that the weight of these two implements is probably about the same but wasn't sure. And yes I might be interested in your blade if you're not too far(150 miles or so) out of my area- I'm in the northeast corner of Alabama near Scottsboro. Thanks,Shawn... ....

I use a 700+ lbs. 6' box scraper with a 24 pto hp tractor and turf tires that track just over 5'. It can be traction challenged but the problem is manageable and I prefer the extra width. Heavy is good in scrapers because light ones don't cut very well. In absence of a loader with weight in the bucket, front ballast is needed for scrapers as well as many rotary cutters. Suitcase weights are convenient but expensive. I heard of somebody filling a length of box beam with lead as an alternative.
I've gone the opposite direction. The longer I've had the scraper and hydraulic top-link, the less I use the loader. I guess it's how a person gets started and the particular work that needs doing. I do shoot grades to specific angles sometimes and it'd take me much longer doing it fussing with the loader. Maybe I got the hang of using the scraper before I learned to do it with a loader, but grading with a loader and I don't get along very well. Other people do get good results though.
I sort of surprised myself and ended up spreading the last tandem load of gravel almost entirely with the scraper--including pulling it off the pile. A hydraulic top-link does make a big difference but you might fiddle with the scraper a bit before selling it. It might turn out to be a very useful implement for you. ....

It's funny that you mentioned Maynard Equipment (they have a dealership less than 10 miles from me)- that's where the tractor came from. I had thought about checking with them but hadn't gotten around to it. I'll definitely agree with you about them being good to deal with. Anyone looking for a gray market tractor should check with these guys- they're very up front about what they sell. Heck, they let me wander around their shop to see their tractors being set up to sell. I'd recommend them to anyone. I still haven't got my blade yet so I will see what they have.... ....
